THE
CHRONICLE
BY PAUL KOSTELNY
DSS Principal
DUNNVILLE
Another year at DSS has
flown by. They say that
time goes quickly when
you are busy
and that is exactly what
has happened in our
school. Each week I put
out a calendar of events to
staff and it is always full of
activities ranging from
sporting events to out of
classroom trips and student
council events. The
DSS Student Council
worked very hard all year
to plan many of the activities
for the student body
and raised $9000 with a
magazine campaign in
order to pay for student
events.
Student Council plans and
runs all of the dances
throughout the year. One
of the highlights of the
year is the Senior Prom.
Our prom was held at
Club Roma in St.
Catharines and was a
huge success. Many venues
are reluctant to host
proms because of the
problems that often occur.
The staff at Club Roma
were amazed at how well
behaved our students

were. The maturity and
good-judgement of our
students continues to provide
an excellent public
image for our school.
DSS has a great spirit of
giving. Student Council
donated $250 from the
proceeds of our Semi-
Formal to the Make a
Wish Foundation. We had
a homeroom challenge
before Christmas during
which students donated a
huge number of toys,
clothes, and food to the
Salvation Army and a
challenge before March
Break during which students
donated school supplies
for the DREAM
Foundation to take to
Mexico. Our Hoops for
Heart Tournament raised
over $800 for the Heart
and Stroke Foundation.
DSS students took part in
the 30 Hour Famine and
raised over $4000 for
World Vision. DSS staff
and students also participated
in a new campaign
in which they raised over
$1500 for AIDS
Awareness. In the Shut
Up and Do Something
Campaign,
those who participated
had to
be silent for 30

hours.
This year, the Suicide
Intervention Team did
many workshops and presentations
beyond the
school to groups such as
Grand Erie Trustees, the
Suicide Awareness
Conference in Orilla, the
Ontario School Board
Trustees Conference in
Niagara Falls, and to various
other organizations
who had heard of our program
and requested a
presentation or workshop
by our students. We intend
to continue the growth and
expansion of this important
program.

Many of our sports teams
continue to enjoy success.
There are too many individual
and team successes to
mention here but a couple
of notable successes were
in the areas of Wrestling
and Track and Field where
we qualified multiple athletes
for the provincial
championships and also
the Girls? Zone Soccer
Championship which was a
great effort by our girls?
team. We had one provincial
champion this year as
Brandon Biggley won his
weight class in the
Provincial Power Lifting
Championships.
At this time of year we are
in the midst of exams
which is a particularly
stressful time for our students.
Many of our graduates
will go off to college or
university in September,
while others will enter the
workforce. We are very

proud of how well our students
do when they leave
DSS and many of our students
receive scholarships
and bursaries which recognize
their efforts. We look
forward to seeing our graduates
at our
Commencement
Ceremonies on October
24, 2008.
Behind the successes of
our students is a very committed,
hard-working staff,
parents and guardians, and
a very supportive community.
DSS teachers continue
to put a lot of extra effort
into sports teams, clubs,
Student Council, and
Suicide Intervention in
order to provide a rich educational
experience for our
students. I am looking forward
to next year and the
opportunity to work with the
staff and students at a truly
great school.
